Simple, Ancient, Powerful Self-Care

The ancient yogis, monks and nuns of Tibet often lived in remote places devoted to the pursuit of self-knowledge and enlightenment. They had to care for their body, health and mind without doctors or medicine. Tibetan Yoga was one of their "medicines". These practices are an amazing form of self-care handed down for well over a thousand years.

The medicine offered in these movements are a panacea for many of the challenges of modern life. They can be done daily, or just taken as needed!

Sixteen Movements

These movements are organized around the 5 winds or energies of the body. There are three for each of the winds/regions of the body, and one preliminary movement.

  • A preliminary movement that includes sound and visualization to purify all our inner obstacles
  • A concluding movement that expels inner and outer obstacles (3 variations)
  • 3 movements for our upward moving wind (prana)
  • 3 movements for our life-force
  • 3 movements for our inner fire
  • 3 movements for our pervasive energy
  • 3 movements for our downward clearing wind (apana)

Many Benefits

Tibetan Yoga hellps us draw the nectar from life by:

  • Cultivating more energy and enthusiasm, peace and joy
  • Creating harmony between body, breath, mind and energy
  • Extending the mind's innate lucidity through the body and into lived experience
  • Balancing the space, air, fire, water and earth elements in our gross and subtle bodies
  • Harmonizing the five winds or energies
  • Reducing the power of anger, desire, and the "negative" emotion

FAQ

Tibetan Yoga 1 Q&A

Why should I try this practice?

If you are taking this class, you have already experienced the power of the Nine Breaths and five Tsa Lung. In the same way that the Tsa Lung extend and enhance the benefits of the Nine Breaths, these Magical Movements of Tibetan Yoga extend and enhance the benefits of the Tsa Lung. These movements take more vigor, but the extra effort, and the dynamic power of the movements combined with the clearing at the end of each movement, really stirs the winds of karma and and clear out the challenges, obstacles and obscurations that keep us from being fully present in each moment of our life.

What does Trul Khor mean?

Trul means magical and Khor means movement or wheel. The movements do have a very circular nature to most of them (but not all), but for centuries practitioners have found that they provide benefits that may at first seem inexplicable. For example, I personally have a part of my left leg that, while it works, I can't consciously engage the muscles. No yoga movement, acupuncture, physical therapy or western medical approach has had any effect. But, there is a single movement of the  Trul Khor that brings this muscle group back into my control for some time after practice. They have similar powers to clear emotional blockages and change our perspective on difficult experiences.

I already practice yoga. How is this different?

Tibetan yoga is more explicitly focused on the subtle body/mind/energy complex than is traditional yoga (Note: I am not saying other forms of yoga don't do this, just that asana tends to be more body/breath focused. The movements in Tibetan Yoga, Level 1 are specifically sequenced to work with the channels and winds of the body in a specific order and way. Also, unlike other systems, the breath is held during the exercises and released only at the end. Each movement ends with a shaking and clearing of the limbs, the breath forcefully exhaled, and sound used to enhance the clearing power. While the movements are a physical practice, they really are much more an energetic practice than a strengthening or opening.

What are your qualifications to teach tsa lung?

I've been studying movement-based meditation for over twenty years and have taught more than 1,700 yoga classes in person and online. In 2010 I began to focus on the art of tsa lung trul khor, the magical movements of the Tibetan Bön Buddhist tradition. I've participated in a 1-year and two 3-year training programs and have authorization to teach these practices from my teachers Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche, Geshe Chaphur Rinpoche, and Alejandro Chaoul. I have taught these practices to hundreds of students at in-person retreats and am excited now to bring them to you online. You can read more about me on my bio page.
